The Settlers II: The Next Generation (for Mac)

Okay, so this is it – the first post in my series “No, this blog does not belong to Daniel only – even though I din’t post anything for nearly 3 months!”. Today I’m going to write a bit about the game The Settlers II: The Next Generation.

Just when the game was released I had to buy it, being addicted to The Settlers II in original. At some day I (fortunately!) switched over to the Mac and thus buried all of my games – none would run on the Mac natively.

But only a few days ago I stumbled upon this: The Settlers II as Cider Port (sorry, german link only) for the Mac. Of course, this version may not be found on Amazon.com but well, I wanted to try it nonetheless. When the game was finished, I ran it for the first time and – it was like wow!

Even using the integrated chipsetgraphics on my MacBook Pro didn’t stop the game from seamlessly running at full detail-settings. No switching over to dedicated card is necessary here!

And guess what? The game is as addicting as it has been, the Mac doesn’t change anything on this! I, for myself, look forward to many hours in the game and want to leave you just one little gimmick at the end:

To make this wonderful thing happen use this (exitToMac.patch, right-click -> Save as…) little patch, like this:

In the Terminal.app change into the directory where your game is installed and apply the patch.

cd “/Applications/The Settlers 2 – The next Generation”
patch -p0 < ~/Downloads/exitToMac.patch.txt

After that, launch the game as usual and be happy when you see the exit message!

Please make sure you are using the german version, as I don’t have access to english language files. So if you’re running the game in english I’m sorry, no “Exit to Mac OS X?” for you.

Disclaimer: This patch alone does not create the "controls.txt" file.
It requires you to already own this file and the game it belongs to!
Thus, the patch may not violate any copyright.
